Teaching Philosophy

Why singing?

Singing is one of the most personal, moving forms of expression available to humankind. My passion for the voice stems from its ability to be versatile: both to be vulnerable at times, but also empowering to the singer and the audience. I believe that through methodical physical and artistic vocal development and rigorous self-reflection, any singer from all walks of life can achieve a great degree of proficiency that will enable them to create art that they are satisfied with. Hence, my role as a teacher is to encourage and guide students to explore and develop their voices to meet their goals as an artist sustainably through experimentation with varied approaches to vocal technique and musical expression.

How can we get there?

I strongly believe in synergizing the voice with the body and mind for a more holistic development of vocal technique. Drawing inspiration from the works of Kristen Linklater, Janice Chapman, and Mary Saunders-Barton, I strive to incorporate musicianship and physical movement while developing vocal technique to encourage the singer’s performative abilities to be ingrained in the way they sing every day. I am also committed to the expression of text and developing vocal artistry and character interpretation. My experience and training in various acting styles enable me to guide each student to use their voices in a way that serves the text and the music equally.

Why me?

My main goal as a teacher is to develop and instill a consistent, healthy, and sustainable vocal technique unique to each student. I believe that each student possesses a different set of skills and learning styles. My expertise lies in my ability to be creative and flexible in my teaching in order to give students the tools to sing with sound technique and expression in a variety of different genres, including pop, musical theater, and opera. I truly believe that being a vocal teacher means much more than teaching the voice - as a voice teacher, you have the power to enable an artist to find their artistic language of communication that can potentially change their life. Hence, I strive to work patiently and diligently with my students to find their most authentic, healthy, and expressive voice, allowing them to thrive in the art form of their choosing.
